OpenAI is looking to hire a senior executive for a new role titled Head of Preparedness a position focused on anticipating the most extreme and potentially catastrophic scenarios that artificial intelligence could create.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated on the social media platform X that the rapid advancement of AI models introduces “real challenges,” making this new role essential to managing the growing risks of advanced AI systems. The creator of ChatGPT specifically pointed to potential impacts on mental health and the dangers of AI-powered cyber weapons.
According to the job listing, the selected candidate will be responsible for “tracking and preparing for advanced capabilities that could introduce new risks and cause severe harm.” This role includes direct leadership over capability evaluations, threat modeling, and the implementation of risk mitigation strategies.
Altman explained that the new OpenAI executive will also oversee the company’s “Preparedness Framework” and ensure that AI models are safeguarded against emerging threats, including advanced biological capabilities. He emphasized that this is an extremely high-pressure and stressful position.
Given several high-profile cases in which chatbots were linked to teenage self-harm and suicide, some observers believe OpenAI’s move may have come later than ideal. These incidents have intensified public scrutiny around AI safety and ethical responsibility.
The phenomenon known as AI psychosis has become a growing concern, as chatbots can reinforce delusions and promote conspiracy theories in vulnerable individuals. Experts warn that without stronger safeguards, the psychological impact of advanced AI systems could worsen.
